I've been using my Mach3 powered lathe to clean up some HRS 1018 mild steel plates (150 mm x 125 mm x 12 mm ) using a center to outside facing operation. firstly center drilling to the required depth with the tailstock.

I was getting fairly long strings of chips, which required me to attend the lathe the whole time the job ran as the insert I was using  did not have chip breaker and decided to write a small program to break up the chips so I could do something else while it was running.

I did this, and wanted to use G96 constant surface speed, and looked at my Fanuc reference and used G50
to limit the spindle speed, which was incorrect as Mach3 uses it for scaling.

In the end, and after RTFM I discovered that it's quite easy, When in G97 the default mode the S value represents the RPM of the spindle, But in CCS mode the S value represents the surface speed in either SFM or for metric surface speed in meters/minute.

I set the Lathe like this G96 S30  which is 30 meters\minute surface speed. about 100 SFM in the imperial system.

I'm using Mach3's built in PID spindle controller.
Worked like a charm, and very easy to do, once you know.
