Made a quick test and played around with dxf files. Works fine for me for collecting parts from dxf files spread over my HDD.
Using the filemerge-plugin I was not really happy.

I have been running this plug-in through its paces with DXF files as well and it works great. Excellent job!
I find that integrating it into the file menu like other software makes way more sense.

I gave it a shot using 3DS files downloaded from Free3D yesterday. Seems to work fine.

Eddy, is it possible to add Gerber files to the list too? CB can also open a nc_drill (.drl) files for PCB drilling and in this case it automatically makes a part with drill MOPs for each drill diameter. So it may be a problem for importing. But they can be inserted in the traditional copy/paste manner.

I left Gerber out because I know very little about it and it seems complicated due to the number of different files associated with one job. My thoughts were that Gerber files would not require "bits and pieces" imported to the document in the same way that dxf components might be, although I may be wrong about that.

Yes. There may be more than one file for a job. Depends how they are exported. For my not so complicated jobs I export a PCB layer to a single file. But I need both layers and the holes point list in single .cb file to be able to precisely flip the job for 2 side milling. I am attaching a small example of Gerber files for 2 layers and the drill file.
