My bird feeders were in sad shape and so I machined out a couple new bases Made from HDPE cutting board material.

Man, I got to tell you, HDPE machines like a dream. It cuts like butter and the shavings feel like teflon, very slippery. The cut are so clean it's amazing.

I used a .25" flat carbide endmill at full speed on my Rotozip, which is about 30,000 rpm.

I set up a new page on this project here with more info and larger images.

Here's a link to my HDPE supplier in case anyone wants a US source.

What a great project and the pictures on your website make them look even better. I bet it's interesting watching all the birds come around to feed.

Cheers

Yeah, I like the birds.  Grin

They go out on feeding rounds. They come around in a group every hour or so. Funny thing is, the group making the rounds consist of 3 different types of birds. Chickadees, Nuthatches and Tutfted Titmice. They all show up at the same time. Must be some benefit from hanging out with the other types of birds.

The Gold finches do not travel with the other birds, they keep to themselves and stay way longer than the other birds.

Interesting stuff: I found out from some bird experts that birds will not sit on one food source all day long, no matter how good it is. It's in their genes to gather food from many sources and so they make the rounds as they do here at my house.
